What problem does it solve? Effective public speaking means being able to transmit messages and info to a target audience in a way that the audience remembers, internalizes, and utilizes that info for a positive benefit. Fundamental public speaking skills apply not only to formal presentations, but to any meetings, interviews, and professional or personal interactions. Many people fear of public speaking hinders their ability to maximize communication effectiveness. But it is a skill that can be learned by anyone. What is your solution and who does it apply to? The format of the workshop is highly interactive and taught by a skilled trainer who has years of practical, varied experience and will effectively model each component being taught to participating professionals. The workshop runs for a full day or better yet, once per week for 6 weeks. The 6-week format includes some light assignments, aka “homework,” that are directly applicable to the jobs of the participants. For professionals who work for the State, this workshop may be offered at no cost during work hours. Participants learn to experiment with valuable communication techniques that positively impact any profession. The workshop includes skills such as focusing on your audience, organization of ideas, message delivery via storytelling, using voice variety, body language, and how to transform a presentation from mediocre to WOW! The individual submitting this idea is appropriately experienced and would welcome the opportunity to teach this workshop. What is the anticipated impact? An effective presentation/communication is not about throwing information out and simply expecting it to be well received, as we often do because of lack of time and/or not understanding the challenges and goals of the audience. An effective public speaker knows that to communicate well, he/she must get/keep a target audience's attention, be organized, wrap key messages in the right verbal packaging, and deliver it all with maximum impact. Participants who learn effective public speaking techniques can magnify any educational outreach for the NJ communities that we serve. The workshop/training can be conducted efficiently, at minimal cost, but the potential to benefit projects, programs, and personnel is enormous! Since this is a skills-based concept, the only costs involved are the cost of materials such as copies of handouts. If this were a recurring opportunity for employees, they could return to the workshop to refine skills and also encourage others employees to participate.
I think this training will also benefit employees who need to have meetings with the public or appear in court on behalf of their dept. Employees can transfer these skills to expressing themselves in other job-related scenarios.
